Synopsis

This story is set in the world of Roshar overwhelmed by its bleak history, outlandish geography, and a plague of an endless war, three main characters are confronted with challenging journeys ahead. Kaladin a former medical apprentice who has sold his career for the sword, Dalinar, Prince of Alethkar, who questions his countrymen’s thirst for war and Shallan who seeks to become a scholar under the mentorship of Dalinar’s niece Jasnah. Each of their trials leads to questions of the past and the truth about Knights Radiant’s abandonment.

Life before death.

Strength before weakness.

Journey before Destination.

The quote above summarizes the heart of the book. This is a story of struggling through hardships for instance knowing the truth and no one believing you because it questions the status quo.

This book is heavy on POVs and I love every one of them from the significant to the minor ones.

Kaladin‘s story as a tragic hero aches the heart but you just know that Sanderson is mainly using his trials and tribulations to strengthen him.

Dalinar’s challenge of being haunted by visions of the past and being questioned by his peers for believing these episodes. He was distraught by his limitations but his resolve panned out amazingly in the end.

Shallan and Jasnah’s mentor and student relationship was also very interesting and I found their dynamic intriguing despite Shallan’s impure intentions.

The magic system of using Shardblades and Shardplates is engaging and dare I say EPIC. I can picture this getting adapted in a video game. This book is only the introduction to the Stormlight Archive and we’ve only been shown the tip of the iceberg.

Guys, this book can look intimidatingly hefty but I assure you that there is so much character payoffs which is such a wonderful and rewarding feeling as reader. I can honestly claim that I am officially a Brandon Sanderson fan and I cannot wait to get my hands on “The Words of Radiance.”
