Synopsis
The story revolves around Makepeace who lives in a Puritian community during the mid-17th century. On the surface, Makepeace looks like any normal twelve-year-old, however, on a nightly basis ghosts trickle in trying to possess her. After the unfortunate and sudden passing of her Mother Makepeace is sent off to her Father’s estranged family in Grizehayes by her relatives.
Unbeknownst to Makepeace’s revelation as to why she was brought there, she tried her best to blend in the shadows and steer clear of any potential mishaps. As time passes by, we see Makepeace come out of the shadows and reasons are unraveled behind why she is forbidden to leave the Grizehayes family house.
With a companion by her side, she takes the risk to escape the house, however, with an unfortunate betrayal she is left at her own account and manages to escape. As she miraculously escapes using her wits, a whirlwind of adventure awaited her with her comrade of ghosts.
Though the pace of the book was quite slow in the beginning, as the story established it did gain momentum. The story was well rounded with an excellent protagonist to guide the reader with the adventures that was taking place. The story was spellbinding from start to finish as we see a remarkable young girl’s transformation into a headstrong and resourceful individual.
Ms Hardinge’s amazing world of stories never fails to disappoint. A rich and endearing story with well-developed characters and an intricate plot that will keep you wanting more.
